Let's Do It! Cyprus 2023
The results of this year have surpassed our expectations! Just for the week of 23rd-29th of October we have had a total number of 27,307 Volunteers with more than 300 teams registering for participation, out of which 213 have been schools. This is almost 10, 000 Volunteers more than last year’s campaign!
9762 litres of mixed trash and 6384 litres of PMD have been picked across our beautiful island! With the help of the Union of Municipalities and the Union of Communities all trash has been collected and taken to legal dumping sites or processed as PMD, whereby all our volunteers were given additional instructions of separating glass, cans and batteries according to local provisions and charities. In addition to this, big objects such as rubbers, fridges etc have been safely moved to green spots to be processed by each municipality separately.
One other focus group which we have been particularly interested in reaching and have been successful are the Ministries and Public Bodies whose actions can influence the public by leading by example. It gives us great joy to announce that after our invite to the President of Cyprus to come join the campaign as the first citizen of the island, Mr. Christodoulides joined our efforts on the 22nd of October where the inauguration of the Campaign took place in a big beach and ocean clean-up that was organised by the Office of the Commissioner for the Environment and the Department of Fisheries and Marine Research. Once again, we had a plethora of Ministries and Public Bodies coming together to help us clean e.g Ministry of Defense (and National Guard), Ministry of Internal & External Affairs, Deputy Ministry of Shipping, Deputy Ministry of Tourism, Ministry of Energy, Commerce & Industry, PIO, Cyprus Police & Fire brigade.
For the second year in a row, we also had the opportunity to be actively supported and sponsored by the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development & Environment with the Minister himself mr.Xenofontos actively participating in our Closing Ceremony on the 29th of October which was the biggest simultaneous cleanup that ever took place in Cyprus bringing together 3 Municipalities in Nicosia and 375 Volunteers who cleaned up the Linear Park across the Pediaios River at the same time. UNDP Diplomats also joined our efforts.
Once again, the Office of the Commissioner for the Environment partnered up to help us reach an even bigger audience across Cyprus whereas the Forresty Department updated their Let’s Do it! Cyprus Map to include new sos areas that need to be cleaned. Our communication sponsors for this year were CYBC (which broadcasted our animation video on TV), Phileleftheros (which covered all online and printed promotional articles and interviews) and Sfera, Kiss and Active radio channels who broadcasted our sound clips throughout their wavelengths and whose radio producers/social media influencers helped us promote our campaign to their followers.
Last but not least, we want to emphasise that Let’s Do It! Cyprus is a campaign which cannot be done without the passion and unconditional love of all our volunteers and personnel who work feverously, sacrificing a lot of hours from their personal time. In accordance with Together Cyprus’ philosophy all personnel hired for this campaign are either students, unemployed or young struggling professionals whose work we want to promote or support.
Our deepest gratitude to all of you for believing in us and trusting us to do our job. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!
